[ TIP OF THE DAY ] VMware vSphere ESXi Virtual Standard Switch (vSS)?

VMware vSphere ESXi Virtual Standard Switch (vSS). The ITSA image shows you a Logical & Physical example of one ESXi Host with one vSS, in there you can see __6 VMs - 2 going by vCenter High Availability (VCHA) PG & - 4 going by Virtual Machine Networks (VMNET) PG __3 Ports Groups MGMT, VCHA, VMNET and __1 VMkernel. All connected to a physical switch by a physical network card. With a vSS this ESXi host doesn't have to be connected to a vCenter server at all. A vSS - vSwitch0 is created during the ESXi installation to configure the management vmkernel interface (vmk0) on it.

- VMK - A virtual network interfaces, used by the (VMKernel) - Used for ESXi management.
- NIC - The real physical interface on the ESX host (VMNIC).
- vNIC - A Virtual Machine Network Interface (vNIC)
- Port Groups - Used to apply a single VLAN to a group of VMs Port Group (PG).
- Uplinks - A physical NIC to bridge the physical and virtual network.
