[ INTERVIEW QUESTIONS ] VCSA Platform Service Controller (PSC).

Impressive Answer! What is VMware PSC? vCenter PSC is the Platform Service Controller. This is an extended SSO model which was there in previous versions of vSphere. It takes care of authentication, licensing, certificates etc.. It is important to make a good impression on whoever is interviewing you. You can explain...

VMware simplified the VCSA topology by supporting vCenter Server with an embedded platform services controller running in enhanced linked mode (ELM). ELM allows you to link multiple vCenter Servers together as a ‘single pane of glass’. This allows architectural design without the complexity of external PSCs or load balancers. NO more external PSCs.

[ INTERVIEW QUESTIONS ] Changing the Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) mode.

Impressive Answer! How can you change the Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) mode of an existing cluster in a vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA)? First, If all the hosts in a cluster are compatible with the new mode, I can change the EVC mode of the current EVC cluster. I do not need to turn off any running virtual machines in the cluster. It is important to make a good impression on whoever is interviewing you. You can explain...

VMs that are running do not have access to the new features in the new EVC mode until they are powered off and powered back on. A full shutdown of all running VMs is required. Rebooting the guest operating system or suspending and resuming the virtual machine is not enough.

[ TIP OF THE DAY ] Why do you need a vCenter Server cluster and not separated ESXi hosts.

Why do you need a vCenter Server cluster and not just separated ESXi hosts to monitoring and manage VMs? Did you know that through the vCenter Server, you can monitor the health and status of all connected ESXi hosts. ESXi hosts managed by a single vCenter Server can be grouped into clusters. The VMs running on hosts in the same cluster share resources between them, including CPU, memory, storage, and network bandwidth.

The following image shows one cluster of a data center. The cluster is made up of three ESXi hosts, each hosting two virtual machines (including the vCenter Server) running their own applications and guest operating systems. Once created, a vSphere cluster enables “cluster only” features such as HA (high availability) and DRS (distributed resource scheduler). Each of these features helps to the tolerance of the VMware cluster failures as well as distributing resources across the VMware ESXi hosts.

[ MULTI-CLOUD EXPERTISE ] [ INTERVIEW QUESTIONS ] [ TIP OF THE DAY ]

[ TECHNICAL QUESTIONS ] [ CHALLENGE QUESTION ] [ FREE VIDEO TUTORIALS ]

[ INTERVIEW QUESTION ] Monitor network traffic for a VM.

Impressive answer! Quest: You want to monitor network traffic and tried to capture network traffic for a VM, but you couldn't see the expected traffic in the packet capture tool. What should you do to resolve the problem? Your best answer... If I need to capture network traffic for a VM, I should Enable Promiscuous Mode on the relevant port group. Then I can capture the network traffic by using any networking traffic capturing tool.

It is important to make a good impression on whoever is interviewing you. You can also mention... Promiscuous mode is disabled by default, and it should not be turned on unless it's required. A tool running inside the virtual machine may be able to monitor any and all traffic moving across a vSwitch if it is allowed to enter promiscuous mode.

Moreover, most likely I need to set the VLAN 4095 at the port group level, which allows the port group to see the traffic on any VLAN while leaving the VLAN tags intact.

Thursday, March 4, 2021

[ TIP OF THE DAY ] Error removing a host from VMware vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS).

You tried to remove a host from a VMware vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS) and got the following error message: "The resource ’9’ is in use" In this example, 9 is the port-ID in use at that time. This could be any number. This happen if the vDS portgroup has vmkernel (vmk) ports still attached. Before removing vDS, ensured that VMkernel network adapters on the vDS are not in use. To fix it, either remove the vmkernel (vmk) NIC or migrate to a Standard Virtual Switch (vSwitch). How to do it?

(1) In the vSphere Client, go to the distributed switch.
(2) On the Configure tab, select More > Ports.
(3) Find all ports that are still in use and check which VMkernel or virtual machine network adapters on the host are still attached to the ports.
(4) Migrate or delete the VMkernel and virtual machine network adapters that are still connected to the switch.
(5) Use the Add and Manage Hosts wizard in the vSphere Client to remove the host from the switch.

If the Software iSCSI LUNs disappear after rebooting or upgrading the ESXi host. How do you add them back? This happens when the iSCSI configuration is corrupted. To fix it, you must reinitialize the iSCSI configuration.

1. Log in to the ESX/ESXi host as the root user.
2. Run this command to disable the Software iSCSI initiator:
# esxcfg-swiscsi -d

3. Must rename all files in the /etc/vmware/vmkiscsid folder
run these commands: EXAMPLE.
# mv initiatorname.iscsi initiatorname.iscsi.old
# mv iscsid.conf iscsid.conf.old
# mv vmkiscsid.db vmkiscsid.db.old

4. Reboot the ESX/ESXi host.
5. Re-enable the Software iSCSI initiator:
